Samuel Adams Honey Porter

This was part of the Samuel Adams Fancy beer box; every brewery produces them. Sadly the Canadian ones only contain 12 beers, while the US one contain 24.

Samuel Adams Honey Porter

Ratebeer 3.16 58th percentile
Beer Advocate B+

Taste +3

This brew pours a dark brown/ruby with a huge fluffy head that never goes away. The nose is usual porter style; roasted malt, cocoa but this one adds a hint of raw honey. Your first taste is unexpectedly shocking from a big box beer mix. Straight off you are flooded with a blast of roasted, bittersweet malt with just a slight hop bitterness at the end. Hints if cocoa are also present. The bitterness fades off to release a flowery honey ending.

Aftertaste +1

Very pleasantly, a full mouth coating of honey/malt slides all the way down your throat and fades away slowly. This is followed closely with a roast/hop bitterness.

Alcohol Content 0 5.25%

It comes in a box, so I was not expecting much.

Value +1

I would get this one again, if available.

Ingame Enhancement 0

No zombies here. This was purchased at some nameless, cookie cutter big box grocery store in Palm Springs. It was the best choice among the boxed beer variety pack.

Overall 5/10

This was above average American big brew; which is not saying much.

Phillips Blue Buck

Phillips Blue Buck
Ratebeer 2.79 29th percentile

Taste +3

The nose is slightly floral hoppy and bready; more so than one might expect from a six pack beer. Nicely carbonated. Very nice balance of toffee/caramel malts and floral hop bitterness. There is a medium mouth feel about this brew. You can also pick up slight fruits (apricot and pineapple).

Aftertaste +1

Not much left, very clean and dry. Only the slightest of toffee malt is mixed with apricots at the end.

Alcohol Content 0 5%

Just as expected from a box six-pack.

Value +1

This is good everyday beer. All this for $12 a six pack, its a great deal.

Ingame Enhancement 0

No gaming tonight; I got called into work after hours. This was my reward when I got home.

Overall 5/10

It's good beer. A bit more flavourful than your average boxed pale ale. I always forget how much I like this beer.

Thunderhead IPA and Raising Funds

Meterman: It must be hard doing these beer reviews week after week.
Flavius: Truth be told, it is hard drinking world class beers and giving my unique, expert opinion.
M: What is the hardest part?
F: It's a financial hardship; these beers are expensive. That is why I plan to have a charitable golf tournament as a fund raiser.
M: Why not have a bottle drive? Isn't it illegal and dishonest to ask for donations so you can buy beer?
F: I never let morality or the law stand in my way of good beer.

Thunderhead IPA (Pyramid)

Taste +3

Nothing new here; straight up hoppy grapefruit nose. Taste is as expected; a welcome hoppy bitterness with a citrus/grapefruit start and a barely noticeable caramel malt sweetness. For those keeping track, it is rated at 67 IBU.
Aftertaste +2

This is where this one is different; the grapefruit lingering is almost creamy and effervescent. It lasts for over 30 seconds

Alcohol Content +1 6.7%

Nice and light for a crazy hopped IPA.

Value 0

It was good but I would get the Green Flash or the 90min IPA instead.
Ingame Enhancement +1

Still more singstar damage

Overall 7/10

This was an excellent hoppy IPA, but there are better ones out there.

Le Merle Saison (North Coast)

Ratebeer 3.6 90th percentile
Beer Advocate B+

Taste +4

At first sniff you might think you have been taken to some tropical island. This brew serves up a huge frothy head, complete with fragrances of yeast, flowers, bread, pineapple and other tropical fruits. Even though the head fades quickly, the heavy carbonation remains. The taste is just like the nose; very citrus fruity, pineapple with bread/biscuits. It is very slightly hopped, but it is overpowered by the fruity malt sweetness. I don't think I have seen a beer this cloudy.
Aftertaste +1

It provides a very crisp, refreshing aftertaste. The residue is similar to green apples.

Alcohol Content +1 7.9%

The alcohol is not aggressive, but it does provide an effervescent feel.

Value +1

This was a wonderful Belgian style Saison, not French. I will get it again.

Ingame Enhancement +1

When we play singstar, many, many beers will vanish.

Overall 8/10 BOOM HEADSHOT

Not surprising, everything by North Coast is great. If you are looking for a lighter fruitier beer, this is the one. Rather like Fin Du Monde but less dark fruits.

Bailout Bitter and Carbon Footprints

Meterman: Any luck trying to reduce your carbon footprint?
Flavius: Yup, I sold the Suburban and bought a Smart car. I am eating more organic foods.
M: That is a good start.
F: But I now have to make six trips to get all my kids to school.
M: Sigh. Well at least there are fewer pesticides.
F: Yup, Kiwis jet fresh from New Zealand. Free range eggs from Poland...
M: You do know that they produce organic kiwis and eggs in Victoria.
F: No Way. I have seen those kiwis farms; they spray the kiwi trees.
M: That was the farmers dog you idiot!

Bailout Bitter (Howe Sound)

Taste +3

With only the faintest nose of hop bitterness, I wonder if it would actually be a bitter. Yup, but it was the sweet tangy bitter, not the dry grapefruit hoppy style. These flavours all floated on a sweet pale malt ocean. A good attempt at a English style bitter. Well balanced between the toffee malts and light floral citrus hops.

Aftertaste +1

Very light coating of bitterness was left, almost a light pale ale style.

Alcohol Content 0 5%

Value +1

This was a nice bitter, I think their best bitter was better. The 1 liter pop-topper costs about $7.

I played singstar with friends. No glasses shattered so it was a good night.

It is a nice refreshing bitter, enough said.

Mort Subite Gueuze

Mort Subite Gueuze

Ratebeer 3.2 62nd percentile
Beer Advocate B

This is one of the oldest styles of beer. The way these beers are created has not changed much. Malted barley, unmalted wheat and dry hops are used. Dry hops tend to not add the classic hoppy bitterness to this style of beer. After these ingredients have brewed, they are left to cool in the open air. Often in large, shallow basins called coolships. This allows faster cooling and maximum exposure to naturally occuring yeasts and bacteria in the air. Often breweries are never cleaned, so as to not disturb the resident yeasts. After cooling these brews may mature in wooden casks for up to 6 years. The 'Gueuze' style of lambic is a blend of new and old lambics. This process produces a pint that is very light and crisp in flavour. The lightness in flavour allows them to be suitable for blending with fruit juices; raspberry is a popular choice.

Taste +4

This brew pours a light copper with a huge fluffy head that will not go away. The nose is very sweet and yeasty with whiffs of cherries and apricots. The taste is very smooth and sweet, maybe a little tartness. You can pick out cherries, honey and raspberries. Carbonation was pretty high, it gave a sparkling apple cider/champagne feel. Despite the hollow mouth feel it was very refreshing.

Aftertaste 0

There was nothing really, it finished dry and clean. Maybe a bit of light fruits.

Alcohol Content -1 4.5%

Value +1

I really enjoyed this light, refreshing beer. A 375ml corked bottle will set you back $4.50 at the BCLS.

Ingame Enhancement +1

We had a great old school CSS night; all the old regulars from the shire showed up. It is great when things turn around. The last time I played (two years ago), these guys pwned me all over the place. This time it was me who did the pwning!

Overall 5/10

This would be a great beer to give someone if they only liked sparkling or white wine. I look forward to the summer and having one of these in my hammock.

Green Flash Imperial IPA

Taste +4

WOW, the aroma hits you as soon an you pop the cap; grapefruit and piny hops. This one is going to hurt. Every single one of those 101 IBU slaps your palate with every sip. Surprisingly the sensation is smooth and creamy; not as bitter as one would expect. There is lot of malt sweetness in there but the hops hide it well. For a strong IPA it is very drinkable. Is that a hint of vanilla bean?

Aftertaste +2

Very nice coating of the mouth with creamy hops and a slight alcohol warmth.

Alcohol Content +1 9%

You can't actually taste the alcohol, but it provides an effervescent feel to the brew.

Value +1

This is a great, super hoppy IPA. I will, without a doubt, buy this one again. At a price of $6 for a 650ml bomber, it is a great deal.

Ingame Enhancement +1

Whenever I find a great beer it makes every occasion special.

Taste +2

Great nose consisting of cashews, pecans and malt. This is a very drinkable brew; the cashew sweetness and roasted barley flavours are pleasantly carbonated. The barely tasteable hop bitterness only appears at the end. More of the bitter flavour became apparent as the beer warmed up.

Aftertaste +1

There was only the slightest of roasted malt left, with just a bit of woodiness.

Alcohol Content 0 5%

Standard for a seasonal beer.

Value +1

Too bad this is a limited edition, I would buy it often. The price was under $5 for a 650ml bomber.

Ingame Enhancement 0

No gaming tonight. I have heard rumours of an expansion pack for L4D.

The nose is just as you would expect with a name 'Belgian brown'; faint citrus and yeasty notes. The taste was rather disappointing. It had a very hollow feeling with slight flavours of apricot and raspberry. The malty sweetness was a little odd; kinda like caramel stored in a plastic bottle.

Aftertaste +1

There was a residue of raspberry vinaigrette; tart and sweet. Luckily the flavour faded quickly before it turned sour.

Alcohol Content +1 7.5%

The alcohol smell and taste is all over the place.

Value 0

It was an eventful beer, I wouldn't get it again. It most likely cost about 5 bucks for a 650ml bomber.

Ingame Enhancement 0

There was none. I'm done talking about this beer.

I said I was done talking, or writing. Not very impressed; odd considering this brewery produces some great beers

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and a Love of Dogs

Flavius: I have a new idea for a TV reality show.
Meterman: I see that your "what not to drink" idea gave you a black eye.
F: This is better, "Extreme Makeover, beer fridge edition."
M: Let me guess, you will go into peoples houses and take away the bad beer and add the good?
F: Yup, kinda like the Grinch that stole my beer.
M: You can start with my house, but nobody else.

Taste +3

This is perfect example of the style; the hoppy nose is very apparent. The first sip graces the mouth with a full-on hoppy bitterness, mixed with ample carbonation. The bitterness is almost stinging, but very refreshing. All this flavour flows well with the citrus malt backbone.

Aftertaste +2

This amazing hoppiness will not go away; all corners of the mouth and throat are coated with a citrus hop bitterness.
Alcohol Content 0 5.6%

Oddly enough, you could smell and taste the alcohol with every sip. It worked well to enhance the flavours

Value 0

This pale ale was nice and I would highly recommend it to anyone, but I wouldn't buy it again. Not sure why.

Ingame Enhancement 0

No zombies this day. I made a huge sandwich for my buddy Gord and we sat around watching the kids play.

Overall 5/10

This brew was a great example of the American Pale Ale style. If you are looking for a Canadian equivalent, pick up a six pack of Granville Island Brockton IPA.

Trois Pistoles and Dangerous Web Ideas

Flavius: We need to get more readers, maybe a tv reality show.
Meterman: Perhaps try quality content worth reading.
F: NO I have it! "What not to drink!" our twist on the make over fashion show "What not to wear."
M: This might work as well as your porn keywords idea.
F: This will be better. We can talk to people in pubs and insult the beer they are drinking. Then we can give them tips on better beers to drink.

This complex, strong beer used to be a Clan ARC favourite. While this honour has been bestowed upon Palo Santo Marron, we often do not have $22 to throw down on a 4-pack of beer.

Taste +3

Well now; there is no missing the pungent aroma of dark fruit, coolness, menthol, yeast and alcohol. Right from the start you know this will be a complex beer. Straight off you are assaulted with a thick malt sweetness, full of dark fruits and apricots. This is very well enhanced with an alcohol tingle, carbonation effervescence and yeasty crispness. One might pick up flavours reminiscent of sour-dough bread.

Aftertaste +2

You just can't seem to rid your mouth of the lingering yeasty fruitcake flavours. It is very similar to eating fruitcake when your Grandma added too much rum.

Swan's Oatmeal Stout

Swan's Oatmeal Stout

Ratebeer 3.1 50th percentile
Beer Advocate B+

Swan's is an excellent brewpub in Victoria. The food is slightly better than average, the atmosphere is great and the selection of beer is the best in the city; at least in my opinion. They usually have 8-9 beers on tap and they brew one of each of the major styles of beer. If you go on Mondays its $3.87 for a full pint!

Taste +2

It is hard to describe how dark this beer pours; this black brew grows a tan head that fades fast. You get what you would expect from an oatmeal stout; coffee, bitter chocolate, malt and apricots. The nose is a little hard to take, a bit acidity, reminiscent of vomit. It coats your mouth with a nice oatmeal/glycerin feel. A very drinkable beer, perhaps a little on the watery side for a stout.

Aftertaste +2

This is where it earns extra points; it coats your mouth for a very long time. This coating holds that malt sweetness and bitter chocolate perfectly.
Alcohol Content 5.4% 0

Not a heavyweight stout.

Value 0

If I recall correctly, a 650ml bomber costs under $5 from the Swan's CBAW. This brew was nice, but there are better oatmeal stouts available.

Ingame Enhancement 0

No L4D tonight. I did watch a Youtube video of Farrah Fawcett on David Letterman. I love watching Hollywood stars making fools of themselves while drunk/stoned.

Overall 4/10

100th beer review!!

Left4beer 100th Beer Review

Welcome, tonight we plan to review the four cheapest beers in the BC Liquor Store. Hopefully this will reset our palates to a lower level. With some luck, this self-inflected wound will allow us to appreciate beer more.

Flavius: Welcome to the left4beer.com 100th beer review session.
Meterman: Can we get this over quickly, I want the Ola Dubh.
F: Certainly, let me create some ambiance and pour our first beer.
M: Playing the zombie flick "Terror Planet" does not create a relaxing atmosphere.
F: Here is our first beer, a truly Canadian classic Molson Old Style Pilsner.
M: . I used to work in a dog wash; this beer smells and tastes like a splashing from a St. Bernard.
F: I can detect a light nose of corn, grass and malt.
M: Actually your cat just crapped in the litterbox; once the air clears check that beer's nose again.
Old Style Pilsner Review

F: Next is Lucky Force 8, a Vancouver Island favourite.
M: I have actually been looking forward to trying this beer.
F: BTW the 8 indicates the alcohol content of 8%.
M: Do we have to finish all 4 cans?
F: No, I will save the other cans in case a hobo comes over.
M: Do I have to finish this can?
Lucky Force 8 Review

F: Now for something imported
M: Ola Dubh?
F: Nope Holsten Premier
M: This one is actually not that bad.
F: Finally one you like.
M: I wouldn't go that far; it is better than the other swill you've been serving.
F: At a price of under $2 for 500ml, you can't go wrong.
M: I wouldn't make that claim either.
Holsten Premier Review

F: Our final selection..
M: Merciful heavens
F: ..is Pacific Pilsner
M: This is only getting worse. These are the same people that make Dude beer and TNT.
F: Please try and keep and open mind.
M: If you make me drink any more crappy beer, I will punch you in the groin!
Pacific Pilsner Review

F: That concludes the beer selection for this evening. Did you want the Ola Dubh now?
M: Groan.. I don't feel so good; I'm suffering from the cheap beer bloat. Perhaps I should head home.
F: Well thanks for coming. L8R. I'm so happy when my plans work well; my Ola Dubh is safe for another day.

Nose of nothing. First taste slaps up a weak pale malt finished with lifeless hops. There was maybe a slight pepper taste for a change of pace. No I did not cut and paste from the other reviews

This does get bonus points for being the cheapest thing in the liquor store. You can get a 500ml can for less than a toonie! I think this is even cheaper than a reusable shopping bag. That means you can return 20 empties and get a beer!

The nose was non-existent. If I had to make one up, I would say there was slight aromatic hops and ice. Like all the other beers in this review, you get the standard corn and malt sweetness, followed by an uneventful hop and carbonation bite. Not really a bite, more like a gumming from kittens. Overall not bitter and not sweet; actually not anything at all.

Taste -2

With a nose of cheap pilsner (corn, newspaper and stale beer), you know the taste is not going to be pretty. As expected, it tastes like carbonated water with a faint hint of high fructose corn syrup and bitter hops.

Meterman: This stuff just tastes like bitter water!

Aftertaste 0

With no taste there can be no aftertaste. Thank goodness.

The brew smells faintly of corn, vinegar, cardboard and a University pub washroom. The first swig (with a Lucky brew you do not sip) serves up a very sweet taste; a lot like apricot juice. Lucky is heavy on the carbonation which tricks you into thinking that this beer has flavour.
